What does StitchCraft help with?

🧵 Why I Built This

I watched a friend try to convert a photo of her dog into a cross stitch pattern using traditional tools. The experience was frustrating:

  1. She had to download clunky legacy software.
  2. The converted chart had over 70 thread colors for a small hoop.
  3. Worst of all was the "confetti hell"—thousands of isolated single stitches caused by camera sensor noise and soft photo gradients. Each one meant stopping, cutting thread, and knotting.

Most online converters naively map pixels using Euclidean RGB distance, completely ignoring how human eyes actually perceive thread color. So I decided to build StitchCraft: a modern, browser-native cross stitch pattern maker that generates charts you can actually stitch.

⚡ Key Features

100% In-Browser & Privacy-First:
The core conversion engine runs entirely client-side using Web Workers. Your personal photos are processed locally on your device and never uploaded to a server. No signup or credit card required.

Perceptual Color Matching (CIELAB Delta-E):
Instead of raw RGB calculations, colors are mapped to all 454 authentic DMC stranded cotton floss shades using Delta-E perceptual color distance. What you see on screen matches the physical skeins you buy at the craft store.

Confetti Reduction & Live Stitchability Score:
Tweak grid width, floss color budget, and smoothing with real-time sliders. A built-in stitchability scoring algorithm recalculates instant feedback on remaining confetti noise as you adjust.

AI-Powered Image Redraw (The Secret Weapon):
Tricky photos (like fluffy pet fur or subtle sunsets) naturally produce confetti. StitchCraft integrates Google Nano Banana 2 and OpenAI GPT Image 2 to intelligently redraw photos into clean, flat illustration styles (Flat Floss, Vintage Sampler, Pixel Art, Folk) before gridding.

Print-Ready PDF Exports:
Download multi-page symbol charts complete with DMC floss codes, estimated skein shopping lists, and exact Aida fabric dimensions (14, 16, 18 count). Free exports include full commercial rights.

💡 Tech Stack & Business Model

  • Tech: TanStack Start (React 19 + Nitro), Web Workers for local image quantization, Tailwind CSS, APIMart (Nano Banana 2 & GPT Image 2).
  • Business Model:
    • Free Forever: Unlimited browser conversions, DMC matching, symbol charts, and PDF exports.
    • Paid AI: Optional AI image-to-image redraw passes run on a credit model ($0.02–$0.03/credit) with 10 free credits upon signup.

💬 What I’d Love Feedback On

  1. UX of the Studio: Is the trade-off between grid size, color budget, and stitchability intuitive?
  2. Performance: Does the local conversion feel fast and smooth on your machine?
  3. AI Styles: Any needlework or embroidery aesthetics you'd like to see added?

Drop a photo in, try a conversion, and let me know your thoughts!
